Patrick Mahomes can reach a level Tom Brady never did if he and the Kansas City Chiefs win their third straight championship in Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brady’s longtime New England Patriots teammate Julian Edelman took a trip down memory lane in recent media appearances to contribute to the conversation of what Mahomes still has to do to overtake Brady’s as the greatest quarterback ever. Head-to-head matchups matter, which ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith backed in his analysis.

“(Brady) beat that dude everyone’s talking about as the GOAT over (him),” Smith said on “First Take” Thursday. “Julian Edelman, to me, bringing that up was just a history lesson as to what entailed Tom Brady as he was achieving seven rings.”

If Mahomes finishes the three-peat, then yes, there’s probably a deeper conversation to have even with Brady still holding three more rings. But Mahomes is on pace to challenge the future Hall of Famer with plenty of football to play.

With that said, even Mahomes believes Brady maintains the top status due to the 2-0 playoff record Brady had against him with wins in the 2018 AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl LV.

Brady has the broadcast call on FOX when Mahomes takes the field for Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9.
