The entire 8.8 million people in New York could combine their happiness, and it still probably would not match Stephen A. Smith’s.
The veteran commentator was in disbelief after the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 94-90, in Game 5 of the NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center on Saturday to clinch their first title since 1973.
At that time, Smith was only six years old. But having been born and raised in New York, he naturally became a die-hard Knicks fan. He has never been shy in expressing his devotion to the team.
After the Knicks’ stunning victory, Smith had a hard time putting into words how he truly felt. And for the outspoken pundit, that is saying something. He found the energy to take a subtle dig at the Dallas Cowboys, though.
“Fifty-three years, fifty-three years, fifty-three years. It’s finally over! For years, I’ve been tortured. They actually associated us with the Cowboys! It’s all over. It’s all over, finally! Finally!” said Smith.

He endured decades of losing, tumult, and dysfunction. It felt like the Knicks were cursed for eternity. But through it all, Smith’s faith in the squad remained. It may have wavered, but it was never extinguished.
Smith has relentlessly trolled the Cowboys, and the Knicks’ shiny championship will only give him more fuel. The Cowboys have not won the Super Bowl since 1996.
He recently had a verbal war with President Donald Trump following the latter’s attendance at Madison Square Garden in Game 3, which the Knicks lost.
Expect Smith to gloat, flex, and strut—God help us—in the next few days. But in the meantime, he is savoring his happiness.
