ESPN’s Stephen A Smith made some serious accusations against United States President Donald Trump in the wake of his threats to the Washington Commanders.

Trump is among those keen on seeing the team revert to the Redskins moniker and, over the weekend, ramped up the pressure. The POTUS took to his Truth Social platform to demand the name change before threatening to block their move to the RFK site unless they adhere.

Stephen A., who has designs on running for office, criticized the President’s statement during Monday’s episode of ‘First Take,’ branding it “petty” and “evasive.”

The sports analyst suggested that Trump was simply trying to placate his voter base while trying to distract them from other serious issues, including the Epstein files.

“I think that the president’s being petty,” he said. “I think it’s him being evasive… it’s just him catering to his base to make sure that he serves to appease them in some way, to distract them from other issues, including the Epstein files, by the way.”

He also argued that the President’s posts were less about sports and more about sparking cultural division for political gain.

Smith also noted that Trump doesn’t have the power to block the stadium deal, more so because Congress passed control of the RFK site to the District this year.

“It seems to be little to nothing that Trump can do about this other than make noise,” he said.

Stephen A Smith had previously voiced support for Trump, though he has also been critical of him at times. The President also praised the ‘First Take’ host as “a smart guy” recently, while talking up his political ambitions.

Whether he replies to Stephen A.’s latest comments remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the Commanders’ ownership is adamant that the team’s name will not change, though they have reintroduced elements from their old uniforms into their kits for the 2025 season.
