Patrick Mahomes has had an unprecedented run of success since becoming the Kansas City Chiefs’ starting quarterback in 2018. During his time at the helm of the offense, the Chiefs have been to seven consecutive AFC Championship Games and made five Super Bowl appearances, winning three of them.
The only other quarterback to ever have that level of sustained success is, of course, the man who many consider to be the GOAT of NFL quarterbacks, Tom Brady. Joe Montana is another quarterback that is often mentioned in the GOAT conversation, as is Dan Marino.
However, on Monday, Stephen A. Smith declared that any debate over who the NFL GOAT is was ended after Patrick Mahomes’ loss in Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles. Absurd? Maybe.
“It’s officially over,” Smith said on First Take. “There’s nothing to talk about. It’s officially… I’m not saying there’s nothing he can do, but we’re talking about years down the road. We’re talking about right now, in the moment. We can be talking about this right now. We can be talking about this next year.
“Let me just throw out these stats for you to get right here,” Smith continued. “This is Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. 3-2 record, 65% completion, 265 yards, alright, 10 touchdowns, seven interceptions, a passer rating at 86.9, okay? Even though he’s won three Super Bowl MVPs.
“You’re talking about Tom Brady with a 7-3 record. His record speaks for itself. Five-time Super Bowl, MVP, all of that stuff. We got to bring Joe Montana back into this conversation because of what we witnessed yesterday. Joe Montana, 4 and 0, 68% completion percentage, 285 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, not a single interception, ever! Okay? A 127.8 passer rating and he’s also a three time Super Bowl MVP.
“So again, after this Super Bowl, it’s one thing to be talking about Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. After this Super Bowl, we talking about Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Joe Montana. Montana’s been back added to the conversation.”
Tom Brady, by the way, thanks to Eli Manning and the Giants, was also 3-2 in his first five Super Bowls. So Patrick Mahomes still has an outside chance of catching Brady, however unlikely.

Stephen A. Smith also talked about how the two losses Mahomes took in Super Bowls were blowouts (one of which was against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers). He didn’t completely discount what Patrick Mahomes has accomplished though.
“He’s phenomenal. He’s great. One game doesn’t make Patrick Mahomes — a three-time Super Bowl MVP. We know what that is,” said Smith. “But in the end, you talk about that GOAT conversation, that went the hell out the window last night at Super Bowl 59.”
