There are several reasons to be excited about the New England Patriots’ 2025 campaign. One of those reasons involves their new-look offense, with their biggest addition to this unit being former All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
In free agency, the Patriots signed Diggs to a three-year, $63.5 million contract, with the hope being that he would come in and be second-year quarterback Drake Maye’s new No. 1 target in the passing game.
However, Diggs doesn’t come without some concerns. He has had his fair share of off-field issues throughout his career, and he is recovering from a torn ACL that cut his 2024 campaign with the Houston Texans short.
By all accounts, Diggs has been making great progress in his return from this serious injury, as he has been on the field with the team from the start of training camp. When it comes to suiting up in Week 1, though, Diggs provided a murky update on his status.
“We’ll see,” Diggs said of his Week 1 status on “Scoop City.” “Everybody is excited. I’m just taking it day by day. I feel great. I mean, I’m pushing the needle always. I’m always doing more than less, and we’ll see about Week 1.”
“I don’t know how I feel about it, we’ll see. Coaches aren’t too excited, I’m not too excited. I’m just trying to take it day by day, so we’ll see. We just don’t know where it’s gonna go.”
If this response seems like it’s a bit all over the place, that’s because, well, it is. Diggs appears to be trying to temper expectations surrounding himself and the possibility of suiting up for Week 1, but at the same time, it seems like if he had his way, he’d be on the field for the start of the season.
The early returns on Diggs in his recovery have been good, but the Patriots aren’t going to push it with their new star receiver. If he keeps on making big plays during training camp, though, New England may have no choice but to take the training wheels off for Diggs by Week 1.
