The New England Patriots made a big splash in free agency this offseason when they went out and signed veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $63.5 million contract%20and%20%24200%2C000%20workout%20bonus.). By bringing Diggs to town, the Patriots were hoping to provide second-year quarterback Drake Maye with a true No. 1 option in the passing game.
Diggs has spent his offseason recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 8 last season with the Houston Texans, but he’s been on the field with New England from the first day of training camp.
At the team’s joint practice with his old team, the Minnesota Vikings, on Wednesday, Diggs linked up with Maye for several highlight plays throughout the day. That’s precisely what the team was hoping to see when they signed him this offseason.
The success of New England’s offense in 2025 will largely depend on the success Maye and Diggs have in the passing game. And based on the former All-Pro’s latest comments, it sounds like he’s a big fan of his new quarterback.
“I think he’s a great kid,” Diggs said on “Scoop City.” “I think he has a good head on his shoulders, and he gives you some moxie. He has that good energy. Everybody who’s met him, talked to him, he’s got some juice to him, and he stays poised. I just wanna be there for him and be a viable outlet.”
As a rookie in 2024, Maye threw for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns in 13 games, although he played wire-to-wire in only 10 of those contests. Beyond that, those numbers were hampered by a truly anemic offense, which the front office worked on fixing over the offseason.
While Diggs will play a big part in the offense, he’s not the only weapon Maye has in the passing game. He already has established bonds with Demario Douglas and Hunter Henry, and the ground game, led by Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, could be even more dangerous than the team’s aerial attack.
New England’s offense has looked good throughout the first part of training camp and the preseason. It ultimately won’t matter unless they perform well during the regular season, though, and it will be up to Diggs and Maye to take this unit to the next level in 2025.
