The New England Patriots picked up one of the most important victories in recent memory in Week 5 when they handed the Buffalo Bills a 23-20 defeat on Sunday Night Football. In a game full of standout performances, though, it was veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs who stood out the most.
Going up against his old team, Diggs was unstoppable, catching 10 passes for 146 yards. Every time Drake Maye needed to make a big completion in the air, he looked Diggs’ way, and he delivered the goods time and again.
Diggs’ performance has not gone unnoticed, as many folks believe he’s back to being the No. 1 wide receiver he was before he tore his ACL last season. It also earned him a unique award, as he earned the Week 5 Himmy Award from ESPN for his performance against the Bills.
The Himmy Award is a fan-voted award handed out by ESPN every week to a player who has “that him” quality when it comes to their play on the field. The stakes were high for Diggs in this one, as it was his first time playing in front of Bills fans since his departure from the team, and he ended up turning in one of the best performances of his career.
When the Patriots signed Diggs to a three-year, $69 million contract in free agency over the offseason, the hope was that he would be able to put together performances like this. For the second straight week, Diggs surpassed the 100-yard mark, showcasing his chemistry with Maye throughout the game.
There’s no doubt this was an important win for New England, but the team still has a lot of work ahead of it. The Pats will look to earn their third straight win when they take on the New Orleans Saints in Week 6, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
