Earlier this offseason, Roman Wilson said he wasn’t bitter about the Pittsburgh Steelers drafting Germie Bernard. The Alabama product and second-round pick is Wilson’s competition for the team’s No. 3 receiver position, but the two are working out together before training camp kicks off later this month.
Wilson and Bernard trained with Route God in a video posted on Saturday, showing that the pair isn’t approaching the position battle at odds.
“Whatever he needs, he’s always welcome to reach out,” Wilson said during OTAs in May. “I can give him any advice (he needs), and I’m always a resource to him.”
Wilson, a third-round draft pick in 2024, was slowed by injuries as a rookie. He couldn’t quite lock down a role within the wideout room last go-round, as he sat behind veteran imports Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Adam Thielen later in the season. Wilson was even inactive for the Steelers’ Wild Card playoff loss to the Houston Texans.
Wilson finished last season with 12 catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns, both of which came with the Steelers down big in the fourth quarter.
Starting 14 games, Bernard led the Crimson Tide with 64 catches and 862 receiving yards last season. He brought down seven touchdowns, as well.
NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein compared Bernard to former Steelers wideout Robert Woods, saying ,”He has good size, accelerates to top speed quickly and is a smooth route runner with well-disguised breaks and clean footwork getting in and out.”
