Pittsburgh Steelers second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson would be happy to add free agent Gabe Davis into the mix.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting wide receiver Gabe Davis on a free agent visit on Thursday. It’s a much-needed addition after trading George Pickens but one that could hurt the outlook of up-and-coming players like second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson.

Wilson, who played just five snaps of in-game action after missing most of his rookie season due to injuries, does not care, though.

“I’ll welcome him with open arms,” Wilson said of the Steelers possibly signing Davis. “My biggest motivation is myself.”

Wilson, Pittsburgh’s third-round pick (No. 84) in the 2024 NFL Draft, has looked like a completely different player throughout the early portions of the offseason.

The 23-year-old revealed it’s thanks to his coaches not giving up on him.

“I missed a lot of time, so putting in a lot of work,” Wilson said. “I feel like I’ve got a lot better. The coaches did a great job helping me develop and you can see it. I feel good.”

However, Wilson will still have to prove he is deserving of a role in the Steelers offense this season. That will be more difficult if the team adds yet another veteran in Davis.

Pittsburgh already traded for wide receiver DK Metcalf and signed veteran Robert Woods in free agency, but Wilson is doing his best to learn from the best.

“Robert Woods has been a great addition to this receiver room,” Wilson said. “He’s a great guy. Brings a lot of different point of views and things that I haven’t really been around. So it’s cool to see that.”

It’s safe to assume if Davis joins the group, Wilson will do the same with him as he looks to rebound from his disappointing rookie year.
