The Pittsburgh Steelers will conclude mandatory minicamp on Thursday before returning next week for their final rounds of OTAs. After that, they will let out for six weeks before reporting to Latrobe for training camp.

This is the time of year for fringe players to show they deserve a spot on the 53-man roster, and one receiver in particular made a big play on Tuesday to do just that.

Wide receiver Roman Wilson tracked down a deep ball from Aaron Rodgers for a big gain, as reported by Brendan Howe of Steelers Now.

“During a two-minute-type team period towards the end of Wednesday’s minicamp practice, Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers skied a beauty — had to be 70 yards in the air — to Roman Wilson, who ran past S Sebastian Castro and under it,” Howe reports. “Perfect link between the two.”

Howe asked Wilson about the play afterwards, to which he expressed a level of confidence that may have been missing in his first two seasons.

“It feels great,” Wilson said. “That’s what I’m here for. It [was] a beautiful ball. [He] puts a lot of air under it. It’s different [to explain] because I’m not really watching it, I’m tracking it, so I just appreciate his placement of where he puts it.”

Wilson has had a rocky first pair of seasons in the NFL. After appearing in just one game as a rookie, Wilson caught just 12 passes in 13 games in his second year. He caught two touchdowns, but they came in garbage time when a loss was already all but certain. With the Steelers’ wide receiver room pretty clear, Wilson and rookie Germie Bernard will battle for the starting slot receiver job. Should he continue to show this type of big-play ability and grow his chemistry with Aaron Rodgers, Year Three could end up being a positive one for the Michigan product.
