Skowronek joined the Steelers last season after the 2024 preseason cuts. Since then, he has carved out a role on special teams. He also earned some time on offense throughout the year. After spending time in Malibu, Calif. with his fellow receivers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Skowronek he is ready to seize the opportunity.
Skowronek spoke to reporters last Thursday. One of the first things he was asked about was the opportunity at receiver.
“I feel like every camp is like that … I’ve never had anything guaranteed for me,” he said. “I don’t really try to worry about the depth chart … I just worry about every day improving, getting better, and earning my keep.”
Skowronek was drafted in the seventh round in 2021. He knows that every opportunity matters and understands what gives me an edge in making the team.
“I play hard, I love playing special teams. I love dirty work,” he told reporters.
However, he thinks he’s overlooked in his primary position.
“I think I’m an underrated receiver as well,” he said.
Finally, Skowronek confirmed that he is quite a basketball player as well, as he demonstrated during his time in in Malibu when Rodgers gave him an alley-oop off the glass. He even got to meet Kevin Durant courtesy of Rodgers.
“Kevin Durant was out [in Malibu] so that was cool for us … KD gave me some shooting advice,” he said of their trip to work out with Rodgers. “Dunking’s just more fun.”
Skowronek surprised Rodgers a little bit with his basketball abilities. The former state champion basketball player may be able to surprise his quarterback, coaches, and Steelers fans more on the field at training camp.
