Veteran pass-catcher Robert Woods isn’t afraid to speak his mind
Tuesday is a significant day for the Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans, as the team will put on pads for the first time this training camp following an off-day Monday. After four practices wearing shorts, it’s time for an authentic tune-up, as real hitting should lead to scrums galore, and a veteran receiver had a message for the team entering their first day.
When speaking with the media, wide receiver Robert Woods had an aggressive take:
“Don’t be soft is the main thing I would say,” Woods said. “Go out there and be physical.”
Woods is the type of veteran who should garner plenty of respect in the Steelers’ locker room. He signed a one-year, $2 million deal this offseason, looking to provide leadership and stability in a young receiver room.
He makes his way to Pittsburgh after playing 171 career games for five franchises, including the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, and now, the Steelers.
Those young wideouts include Calvin Austin III, who is known for his home-run speed, and Roman Wilson, who, similar to Woods, has always been praised for his route-running abilities. The second-year wideout should benefit from having a security blanket like Woods as a mentor.
Woods hasn’t had a 1000+ yard season since 2019, but he’s hoping for a rejuvenation this season. If nothing else, he’ll provide guidance and supervision on an offense full of young skill-position players.
