DK Metcalf will not be on the field to help the Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6) clinch the AFC North during the final two games of the regular season. The star wide receiver’s suspension for swinging at a Detroit Lions fan this past Sunday is being upheld following his appeal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Besides the consequences it can obviously have on the team, this decision greatly impacts Metcalf’s financial situation. He could potentially lose a massive chunk of his earnings, as the suspension will void $45 million in future guarantees. The 28-year-old heads into the holidays with a great deal of frustration.
The fan told a reporter that the reason Metcalf exploded was because he called him by his full name (DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf). Chad Johnson said that he “got word” that the man called the former Second-Team All-Pro a racist slur and also made a vulgar remark about his mother. There has been no evidence to corroborate those accusations at this time.
It should be noted that Metcalf reported the same individual to team security while playing for the Seattle Seahawks last season. The fan can be seen gloating following the two-time Pro Bowler’s outburst.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he does not condone his player’s actions, but he does support him. Pittsburgh currently holds a two-game lead in the division and wraps up the regular season on the road against the Cleveland Browns (3-12) and at home versus the Baltimore Ravens (7-8). Although the squad is in great position to clinch a playoff berth, there is no guarantee everything will run smoothly in an AFC North matchup.
The DK Metcalf situation could complicate the Steelers’ winter plans. He will try to stay sharp during his NFL-mandated absence.
