Behind the Steel Curtain
The Steelers worked out six players on Tuesday, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson and the NFL transaction sheet.
The tryouts were defensive backs Zy Alexander, Evan Holm, Makari Paige, Doneiko Slaughter, and J.T. Woods, as well as tight end Jaheim Bell.
Woods has the highest draft pedigree of the bunch as a 2022 third-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers. He played in 13 games across the 2022-23 seasons, starting one, with eight career total tackles. The 6’2, 295-pound safety scored a 9.43 RAS coming out of Baylor three years ago. He has just 89 career special teams snaps.
The lone non-defensive back the Steelers worked out, Bell is a hybrid tight end/fullback who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Patriots. Despite being undersized for a traditional tight end at 6’2, 241 pounds, he scored a strong 8.5u RAS entering the draft.
Bell appeared in 15 games for the Patriots in 2024, playing 176 special teams snaps and logging two catches for 20 yards.
Pittsburgh didn’t make any immediate signings following the workouts, but tryouts this time of year can also serve as the opening stage of building offseason 90-man rosters.
