The Pittsburgh Steelers will not have an emergency quarterback for their Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Steelers placed Skylar Thompson, who served as the emergency quarterback in Week 1, on the injured reserve list this week. Thompson suffered a hamstring injury in practice leading up to the season opener against the New York Jets, when he was serving as Justin Fields on the scout team offense.
Thompson was able to dress in an emergency capacity in Week 1, but was placed on the IR before Week 2, with the Steelers re-signing Logan Woodside to the practice squad to replace him.
Woodside had been with the team in training camp, and was part of the club’s final cut down to 53 players in August.
But Woodside was not elevated from the practice squad for the Week 2 game by Saturday’s deadline, meaning that the Steelers will have just two quarterbacks available to them for Sunday’s home opener against the Seattle Seahawks: starter Aaron Rodgers and backup Mason Rudolph.
The Steelers will have just two quarterbacks on their active roster for at least a few more weeks. Rookie quarterback Will Howard, who is on the injured reserve list with a broken right pinky finger, must be out until Week 6, after the Steelers return from Ireland. Thompson can return in Week 7.
The only player called up from the practice squad for the Steelers in Week is special teams linebacker Jon Rhattigan, meaning the team will also play the game with just four healthy cornerbacks: Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay, Brandin Echols and James Pierre.
The NFL brought the emergency quarterback rule back in 2023, allowing a third quarterback to serve in an emergency situation while not counting against the number of players usually allowed to dress in a game.
