The Steelers didn’t have much trouble with the Browns while earning a victory at home on Sunday, but they didn’t get any help from the turf that caused some issues during the contest. Aaron Rodgers firmly voiced his displeasure with the conditions that led to a missed field goal and may have caused an injury, and the team isn’t wasting any time addressing those complaints.
Artificial turf has become a very hot topic of discussion in the NFL in recent years due to evidence that strongly suggests it is responsible for more injuries than its natural counterpart, and the conditions of the field at a game usually only end up being talked about for all of the wrong reasons.
Super Bowl LVII was marred by the turf that the NFL went out of its way to hype up prior to the game before it was roundly criticized to the point where some Eagles fans argued it ended up being a key factor in the team’s loss to the Chiefs.
The Steelers were able to avoid succumbing to the same fate against the Browns on Sunday, but the grounds crew at Acrisure Stadium will be shouldering a major project over the next couple of weeks after the field there spawned some similar complaints.
The Steelers improved to 4-1 on the season with a 23-9 victory over the Browns on Sunday, but the team that had home-field advantage found itself at a disadvantage thanks to the conditions of the field in question.
The margin of victory would have been even greater if Chris Boswell had converted a 54-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, but he certainly didn’t get any help from the turf that caved in when he planted his foot to attempt the kick that missed the uprights.
This is why I hate the Steelers sharing their stadium with a college football team. Chris Boswell shouldn’t have to kick FGs in these conditions. pic.twitter.com/VW4yX5xIDa

Pittsburgh also lost special teams captain Miles Killebrew to a non-contact knee injury that head coach Mike Tomlin described as
“significant.” He did not say the turf was the cause of that setback, and while Boswell also declined to discuss the topic after the game, the same cannot be said for Aaron Rodgers, who had this to say via Trib Live:
“The field got borderline unplayable. I just felt like it got real beat up. By the time the third quarter rolled around, that thing was really beat up.”
The outlet reports the grounds crew was seen performing “heavy maintenance” after the game, but things are apparently bad to the point where the entire field will be resodded before the Steelers take the field at home for their showdown with the Packers on October 26th—a day after Pitt hosts NC State at the venue.
