Steelers waive rookie TE in flurry of roster moves

The Steelers have waived undrafted rookie tight end D.J. Thomas Jones in a flurry of Monday roster moves that included waiving defensive back Cameron McCutcheon with an injury designation.

In a corresponding move, the Steelers signed defensive back Mikey Victor and tight end Kevin Foelsch.

Although far from roster locks, Thomas-Jones and McCutcheon had become recognizable names to Steelers fans over the summer. The former had received the biggest non-quarterback signing bonus for an undrafted free agent in team history in the spring, and had recovered from a training camp injury scare. However, Thomas-Jones didn’t play in the Steelers’ preseason opener against the Jaguars, even if he was released without an injury designation.

McCutcheon did play in the opener, even recording an interception that was eventually called back due to a roughing the passer penalty. However, he was the only Steeler to appear on the injury report following the game with what head coach Mike Tomlin described as a “soft-tissue” injury, possibly to his hamstring.

To fill the open roster spots, the Steelers added Victor and Foelsch. Victor played college football at UNLV and Alabama State, playing in nine games with 36 total tackles, two interceptions, and 15 passes defensed in 20223 for the Hornets. The 6’3, 209-pound corner went undrafted in 2024, eventually spending some time with the New England Patriots. He’s never appeared in an NFL game.

Foelsch should be a familiar name. He was recently with the Steelers from July 29 – Aug. 5, and is now back for a second stint in Pittsburgh. Here’s what we wrote about him when he first worked out for the team last month:

Foelsch also went undrafted in 2024, initially signing with the Carolina Panthers. In a busy rookie year, he spent time with the Jets, Eagles, and Chiefs. However, the 6’4, 250-pound tight end has yet to appear in an NFL game.

Foelsch ran a 4.65-second 40-yard dash coming out of the University of New Haven. In 2022, he logged 25 catches for 191 yards and five touchdowns.
