The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived promising young cornerback Cameron McCutcheon, the team announced on Monday.

McCutcheon was waived with an injury designation after suffering a hamstring injury during the team’s preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

If McCutcheon clears waivers, he will revert to the team’s injured reserve list, where he can stay for the remainder of the 2025 season. Because hamstring injuries are rarely season-ending, it’s more likely that then team and McCutcheon will reach an injury settlement, and he will be released.

That will give McCutcheon the ability to return to the NFL this season. He can sign with another NFL team after he is fully healed. He would be eligible to re-sign with the Steelers after an additional six weeks have passed.

McCutcheon had an interception in Saturday’s preseason opener, but it was called back due to a roughing the passer penalty. He was injured while covering a punt as a gunner late in the game and finished without any statistics.

An undrafted free agent out of Western Carolina in 2023, McCutcheon spent all of the last two seasons bouncing between the Los Angeles Rams practice squad and active roster, without playing in game. He singed with the Steelers on a future contract in January.

The Steelers are suddenly very thin at cornerback. Joey Porter Jr. is still working his way back from a hand injury. Jalen Ramsey is dealing with an undisclosed injury. Darius Slay suffered a right ankle injury at training camp on Monday. Cory Trice has been out with a hamstring injury and Donte Kent has been out with a foot/ankle injury.

In addition to releasing McCutcheon, the Steelers also waived tight end DJ Thomas-Jones and signed tight end David Foelsch and defensive back Mikey Victor.
