UNITY TWP, Pa. In addition to tight end Jonnu Smith, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin revealed after the first practice of training camp that running back Cordarrelle Patterson is also considered day to day. Tomlin did not disclose the nature of the injuries.

Patterson was in sweats on Thursday and did not participate. Smith participated in indy drills but not team periods

Outside of Patterson and Smith, Tomlin’s unit is healthy after day one.

Patterson, 34, missed most of training camp due to a hamstring injury and could never get rolling in his first season with the Steelers. His 21.8 yards per return average was the worst in the league for players with a minimum of eight attempts. His history with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith could work in his favor, but with the team inking Kenneth Gainwell to a cheaper one-year deal to serve as the third cog in the rotation, his roster spot appears to be in serious jeopardy.

The Steelers placed starting left guard Isaac Seumalo on the non-football injury list, Tomlin announced on Wednesday after the team reported to training camp at St. Vincent College.

Seumalo is dealing with a soft-tissue injury that Tomlin said could slow him down at the start of training camp.

Seumalo is the only Steelers players that was not healthy enough to complete the team’s run test and pre-camp physicals on Wednesday. Tomlin also said that all 91 players on his team’s offseason roster have reported to camp.

With Seumalo unavailable, the Steelers will turn to third-year offensive lineman Spencer Anderson. Anderson played in all 17 games in 2024 and made four starts while Seumalo dealt with an early-season pectoral injury.

Alan Saunders and Brendan Howe provided reporting from St. Vincent College.
