Pittsburgh Steelers veteran defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi has been named a potential cut candidate this offseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers freed up $13.4 million in salary cap space with the release of linebacker Preston Smith last week. The Athletic doesn’t think that’ll be the last veteran the team cuts this offseason, either.
The Athletic has also named veteran defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi as a potential cut candidate for the Steelers.
“Ogunjobi signed with the Steelers in 2022 after tallying double-digit TFLs and QB hits in three of his first five seasons. But during his three years in Pittsburgh, he’s only once reached double digits in any category (QB hits in 2022), while playing through numerous injuries,” The Athletic writes. “The Steelers, who are scheduled to employ the NFL’s highest-paid defense for the fourth consecutive year in 2025, can save $7 million of Ogunjobi’s $10 million cap hit by cutting him. While that would leave a hole on the defensive front, the Steelers can fill it with a younger, less-expensive option in the draft. Whether the Steelers make this move or not, expect them to target a defensive lineman early on draft weekend.”
Ogunjobi joined the Steelers on a one-year deal in 2022 before signing a three-year, $28.75 million contract extension the following offseason.
However, the 30-year-old has simply not lived up to that payday. Over the past three seasons, he has recorded just 132 tackles (62 solo), six sacks, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries while never being able to stay full healthy.
Ogunjobi’s underwhelming production coupled with the fact that the 2025 NFL Draft is supposed to be very deep with defensive line talent makes it even more likely the Steelers will decide to part ways with him this offseason.
The Steelers will create yet another hole they will have to fill this offseason if they do release Ogunjobi, but his $10.53 million cap hit for the 2025 season is just too high and an extra $7 million back in their pockets could help them do just that.
