The Pittsburgh Steelers tried out tight end Tre’ McKitty at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Tuesday, according to the NFL transactions page.
McKitty, 26, was a college teammate of current Steelers Broderick Jones and Darnell Washington at Georgia in 2020.
A third-round pick of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021, McKitty played 34 games over his first three seasons with the Chargers. His best year came in 2022, when he appeared in 17 games, made eight starts and caught 10 passes for 72 yards.
He was released midway through the 2023 season and signed with the Buffalo Bills practice squad. He stayed in Buffalo through August 2024, when he was once again released. McKitty signed with the Cleveland Browns last December and re-signed with the club for 2025, but was released in June. He spent a week with the Houston Texans this preseason, playing nine snaps in one game.
Throughout his career, McKitty has primarily been used as a blocking tight end. The 6-foot-4, 243-pound tight end ran a 4.71-second 40-yard dash in pre-draft testing coming out of Georgia. He also posted an impressive 23 bench press reps for an overall 6.20 Relative Athletic Score out of 10.
A native of Wesley Chapel on the West Coast of Florida, McKitty spent his first three collegiate seasons at Florida State, where he was the most productive. McKitty caught 26 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns in 2019 and 23 passes for 241 yards in 2019.
At Georgia in 2020, he caught six passes for 108 yards and one score, splitting time at the tight end position with Washington and John FitzPatrick, who is now with the Green Bay Packers.
The Steelers have four tight ends on their active roster: Pat Freiermuth, Connor Heyward, Jonnu Smith and Washington, and signed Matt Sokol to their practice squad on Wednesday.
