PITTSBURGH — Welcome to the Steel City, Jalen Ramsey. As one of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ flashy off-season additions, the veteran defensive back treated the Acrisure Stadium crowd to the Steelers’ first defensive takeaway of the season on Sunday.

On a first-quarter first-and-10 from the Seattle Seahawks’ 29-yard line, Sam Darnold tried to hit Cooper Kupp on an out route nearly 20 yards downfield. Ramsey jumped in front of his former Los Angeles Rams teammate to snag it for his first pick in black and gold.

The interception was the 25th of Ramsey’s NFL career. He had five over the past two seasons with the Miami Dolphins and 10 with the Rams. During his first three-plus years as a pro, he snagged nine with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers’ offense couldn’t capitalize for a touchdown, but Chris Boswell’s 48-yard field goal cut the visitors’ lead to a point with 2:13 to go in the opening frame.

Ramsey’s takeaway was the latest in an early line of impact plays for the Steelers. He sealed the team’s season-opening win by violently breaking up a Justin Fields pass intended for Garrett Wilson.

“It was a visual play call, so I was able to get visual on Justin and saw him kinda moving in the pocket, but saw Garrett coming across the field in my peripheral,” Ramsey said. “(I) just do what I do.”

Ramsey’s former Dolphins teammate, Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith, said it was just another day in the office for the 10th-year coverman.

“That’s expected from him, that’s what he do,” Smith said. “That’s his résumé. It speaks for itself. We needed that. We needed that.”
