Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan said the team plans to address its wide receiver room in free agency.
INDIANAPOLIS — The Pittsburgh Steelers put all their eggs in one basket last offseason, ultimately being left with a very underwhelming wide receiver room after Brandon Aiyuk returned to the San Francisco 49ers. Steelers general manager Omar Khan isn’t going to let that happen again, though.
On Tuesday, Khan revealed that wide receiver may be the Steelers’ most important position to address in free agency, outside of quarterback.
“It’s obviously a priority,” Khan said. “I’m not going to run from that. It’s just the reality. We have some guys that are free agents who weren’t good enough at that position. So we’ll look at everything.”
The Steelers won’t be short of options. Chris Godwin, Darius Slayton, Amari Cooper, Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, Marquise Brown and DeAndre Hopkins highlight the upcoming free-agent wide receiver class.
There are several wide receivers who could become available via trade or if cut, too. Los Angeles Rams Cooper Kupp, San Francisco 49ers Deebo Samuel and Jacksonville Jaguars Christian Kirk are all players who could be moved in the coming weeks.
However, the Steelers top priority remains quarterback. Khan reiterated what president Art Rooney II said last month in that the team hopes to resign Russell Wilson or Justin Fields before they hit the open market.
Once the Steelers’ quarterback is in place, who will be catching balls from him will follow shortly after.
“It’s an ideal scenario you’d like to have this done before the start of the league year,” Khan said. “Who you sign impacts the type of receiver you may go after or how you build the rest of the team.”
There’s certainly work to be done with just George Pickens, Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson currently under contract in 2025. But it’s safe to assume the Steelers will do whatever it takes to find a No. 2 wide receiver this offseason.
