After seven consecutive NFL seasons without a victory in the playoffs, longtime Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down from the position that he’d held for 19 seasons, starting in 2007. He departed with an NFL-record streak of 19 consecutive seasons without a losing record, and also won Super Bowl XLIII.

Another former Super Bowl-winning head coach took his position when Mike McCarthy was officially announced as just the fourth new coach of the franchise since 1969.

While there are always going to be new perspectives and philosophies when a new coach takes over, star Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt is noticing a very specific difference in practices under McCarthy as opposed to Tomlin.

“You don’t see benches out here anymore,” Watt explained via Ray Fittipaldo on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We’re doing things much different than what I’m used to over the last nine years. And it’s good. Change is good for me.”

Meanwhile, experiencing life under his second head coach has been an adjustment for Watt, but not one that he’s shying away from.

“It’s been a lot, yeah, I’m not going to lie to you,” Watt said about the change via Steelers Depot. “It’s been a lot of studying, a lot of learning, a lot on the iPad. Also trying to see new faces, not only players and coaches. There’s been a lot of really good work. As you guys can see, things are a little bit different around here.”

“It’s tougher as you get older to get work in, but it’s all been phenomenal.”

Watt and the rest of his teammates will report to Training Camp on July 28.
