Steelers Thrive in Throwback Uniforms Under Mike Tomlin
Steelers Now Steelers Now

Since Mike Tomlin took over as head coach, the Pittsburgh Steelers have thrived in throwback and alternate uniforms.

After a disappointing game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football, the Steelers now turn their attention to the Green Bay Packers. The game is on Sunday Night Football and has just a minor story at hand: Aaron Rodgers facing his former team of 18 seasons. Pittsburgh will also debut its new 1933 throwback uniforms.

Under Mike Tomlin:

Not including Color Rush, the #Steelers in a designated throwback uniform are 16-5.

The last loss was 2015 v. CIN in the “bumble bee” throwbacks.

In just Color Rush they are 8-3.

They are 4-0 in alternate uniform debuts.#HereWeGo https://t.co/m5fPWQA2Ut pic.twitter.com/dPp44ry0vw

Under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers have been dominant in throwback uniforms. Since 2007, they have a 16-5 record in designated throwback uniforms (not including “Color Rush”).

Under Tomlin, the Steelers have had three throwback uniforms prior to these new uniforms. Their records in these uniforms are outstanding.

2007-2011 “75th Season” Throwbacks: 7-3
2012-2016 “Bumble Bee” Throwbacks: 3-2
2018-2024 “70s” Throwbacks: 6-0

If you included the Color Rush jerseys that debuted in 2016 and are still being worn today, that record is 24-8 (8-3 in Color Rush). The Steelers are 4-0 in the debut of these four uniforms.

The last time the Steelers lost in a non-Color Rush alternate/throwback uniform was 2015 against the Bengals.

Maybe it’s the Jerome Bettis “look good, feel good, and play good” philosophy that kicks in for Tomlin’s team. Regardless, they will need anything to help them get back on track Sunday night.

The Packers are coming off of a thrilling victory in Arizona. They’d love nothing more than to prevent their former quarterback from accomplishing the rare feat of defeating all 32 franchises.

The Steelers are also expected to wear their Color Rush uniform on Dec. 15th for Monday Night Football. Pittsburgh has had many memorable games in alternate uniforms.

Some of those include Ben Roethlisberger’s five-touchdown and six-touchdown performances in 2007 and 2014, respectively. Last season, Russell Wilson debuted for the Steelers in their ’70s throwbacks.

Will Tomlin’s Pittsburgh Steelers respond to their loss with another strong debut in a new alternate uniform?
