The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving onto the next phase of their offseason workouts. They will be doing so without one of their recent rookie free-agent signings, as the team announced that former BYU defensive lineman Blake Mangelson was released.

The #Steelers have released rookie defensive lineman Blake Mangelson, the team announced.

Mangelson was signed after the release of Steelers veteran defensive lineman Montravius Adams. It was an uphill battle for Mangelson even after Adams’ release, but that has now been cut short.

Mangelson was offered a rookie tryout at the Minnesota Vikings rookie minicamp before he decided to sign directly to the Steelers’ roster. He was likely seen as a fit as he matched the Steelers’ mold of defensive linemen: big, tall, and with great arm length.

Before joining the Steelers, in his collegiate career at BYU, Mangelson recorded 82 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and two-and-a-half sacks. His senior season he recorded two sacks, six tackles for loss, and 37 tackles. He also recovered his only career fumble.

Mangelson is a native of his college’s state of Utah where he graduated from Juab High School. He did not have a star rating during the recruiting process but became one of BYU’s strongest contributors as a walkon. He received multiple All-Big-12 third and fourth-team honors and also obtained All-Big-12 Academic honors.

It is uncertain if he will have the opportunity to rejoin the Steelers in the future.
