PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did not have a substantial update on the status of star outside linebacker T.J. Watt on Friday, saying he prefers to let Watt speak for himself.
Watt was at the team’s facility for practice on Friday, the second straight day he was at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. But it seems unlikely that Watt will be able to play this Sunday when the Steelers visit the Detroit Lions.
Watt suffered a partially collapsed lung last Wednesday after undergoing a dry needling procedure at the team’s facility on an off day, his brother, CBS Sports analyst J.J. Watt, reported last week.
“Yeah, he’s working through it. He’s working through it,” J.J. Watt said this week in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. “It’s obviously not somewhere that he expected or would like to be. Just handling the situation day by day and making sure to find the appropriate and proper steps to get back to where he would like to be.”
T.J. Watt was hospitalized and had a minor procedure to correct the issue last week. The team has not announced a prognosis or timeline for his return, and Tomlin said on Friday that he prefers to let Watt speak for himself, given the nature of the incident.
At his Tuesday press conference, Tomlin gave no details about the nature of Watt’s injury and how it occurred.
“I have no new information regarding that,” Tomlin said. “None whatsoever.”
Nick Herbig replaced Watt against the Miami Dolphins on Monday. His status for this week’s game is also uncertain, after he suffered a hamstring injury late against the Dolphins.
