The Pittsburgh Steelers starting offensive tackles, Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu, did not allow a single pressure Saturday per PFF.

One of the biggest talking points for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason was the offensive tackle position. Not only was last year’s first-round pick Troy Fautanu set to return from a shortened rookie season, but Broderick Jones returned to his natural left tackle spot. On Saturday, the duo performed well. It was also highlighted by PFF tracking.

Only the preseason (and Mason Rudolph got the ball out fast), but a strong sign against a premier duo in Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker

Jones and Fautanu faced off against the Jacksonville Jaguars’ two top-10 primary edge rushers early in the game. Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, in their limited play, did not get any pressure. Jones and Fautanu logged 24 pass protection reps together.

The only sack allowed early on came on a play where quarterback Mason Rudolph held onto the ball a little too long, unable to find an open receiver. Neither tackles were penalized for this play according to PFF tracking.

The only mistake of the game made in pass protection came from Fautanu when he was penalized on the opening drive. The Illegal Use of Hands penalty didn’t matter as the Steelers finished the drive with a 19-yard Rudolph touchdown pass to Darnell Washington.

Despite the concerns that arose from Steelers camp, most frequently with Jones, the starting duo got off to a positive start.

Yes, it was preseason. However, against two premier EDGE rushers, it’s a good sign to see. The work has just started for this duo and the Steelers.

The Steelers will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week and also have joint practices with them. Not only will Jones and Fautanu get to face another set of pass rushers, but Pittsburgh will see some familiar faces on the other sideline.
