INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Darius Slay went down with an injury in the second quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Steelers announced that Slay is being evaluated for a concussion and is questionable to return.

Slay got injured on a friendly fire incident when making a tackle on Chargers running back Kimani Vidal. Safeties Kyle Duggar and Jalen Ramsey collided into Slay’s helmet.

Slay went out of the blue medical tent and walked to the Steelers locker room with the NFL red-hat independent neurological consultant.

James Pierre replaced Slay at the left cornerback position. Pierre made an instant impact by slamming Chargers wide receiver Derius Davis.

Slay spent the last five years with the Philadelphia Eagles as a starting outside cornerback. He started 14 games for Philly this regular season, plus another four on the Eagles’ run to their Super Bowl LIX championship. He finished the regular season with 49 tackles, three tackles for loss, 13 passes defended and one forced fumble.

It’s been a rough start to Slay’s tenure with the Steelers. He hasn’t been great in coverage, and his effort was questioned in the Steelers’ Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Slay admitted heading into Week 9 that he has not lived up to expectations.

“I ain’t been playing the best. But I’ve been playing decent. But I gotta, on my end, for sure play better,” Slay said.

Despite being 34, Slay believes he can still play at a high level.

“I know I got a lot left. I’m making some plays, just gotta be way more consistent overall,” he said.

The 13th-year veteran has been a part of miscommunications, missed tackles, and eventually saw his snaps decrease Sunday in favor of Brandin Echols. He also raised eyebrows on Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver Savion Williams’ touchdown in the third quarter, as the veteran CB displayed awful effort.

Former Steelers running back Merril Hoge ripped Slay for dogging it.

“Listen, those type of plays, I just don’t know how you go on,” Hoge said of Slay’s effort on the 102.5 WDVE Morning Show. “Here’s what disturbs me. How do you go into your meeting room with your peers and watch it? I just, honestly, I don’t even know. I’ve never been there, and I’m glad for that because that’s not how you play football.”
