UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ latest training camp injury might be their most impactful, as starting outside linebacker Alex Highsmith left Sunday’s session with a groin injury, head coach Mike Tomlin announced.

Highsmith was injured late in practice, during a 1-on-1 period between offensive and defensive linemen. Highsmith walked off the field under his own power without any indication of injury. Tomlin said the severity of the injury is still being evaluated and he expects to have a further update on Tuesday, after the team’s off day.

Highsmith suffered a pair of groin injuries during the 2024 season that limited him to a career-low 11 games. He told Steelers Now this spring that he was focused on taking better care of his body this offseason, in order to help prevent soft-tissue injuries like the ones that plagued him last season.

The Steelers have a ton of depth at the edge rusher position. With T.J. Watt not participating in team drills and Highsmith out, the Steelers used Nick Herbig and fourth-round pick Jack Sawyer at edge rushers on the final team period of Sunday’s practice.

Elsewhere, OT Calvin Anderson (soft tissue), WR Calvin Austin III (undisclosed), CB Donte Kent (foot/ankle), DT Esezi Otomewo (right knee), CB Joey Porter Jr. (hand) and CB Cory Trice (hamstring) all missed practice.

Center Ryan McCollum (left leg) and tight end DJ Thomas-Jones (left calf/ankle) both returned to work after minor injuries.
