UNITY TWP., Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers starting cornerback Darius Slay suffered an injury and left practice early during the team’s penultimate practice session of training camp at St. Vincent College on Monday.

Slay was injured on the first play of practice, during the team’s seven shots period, when he gave up a touchdown to DK Metcalf. He was checked out by team trainers and remained on the field, but did not return to practice.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said after practice that Slay rolled his ankle, and that he doesn’t expect it to be a long-term absence.

Slay’s injury adds to what is already a banged-up group for the Steelers at cornerback. Jalen Ramsey did not practice for the third straight day as he works through a minor injury. He was spotted doing solo work off to the side.

Joey Porter Jr. continues to build up practice reps after returning late last week from a hand injury.

Backup outside cornerback Cory Trice is out with a hamstring injury, rookie slot cornerback Donte Kent remains sidelined with a foot/ankle injury, and Cameron McCutcheon was waived with an injury designation after suffering a hamstring ailment during Saturday’s preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That left the Steelers awfully thin at cornerback, with Brandin Echols, James Pierre and Beanie Bishop joining Porter. Echols also played in the slot some, which he has done in the past with the New York Jets, but has not done since joining the Steelers this March.

The Steelers also have Kyler McMichael, Daryl Porter Jr. and just-signed Mikey Victor in training camp.

slaSlay, 34, is the oldest member of the Steelers’ secondary. He missed two games last season due to injury, one from a groin injury and the other from a concussion. He missed four games with knee injuries in 2023 and last played a full season in 2022.
