Upgrades are coming to Acrisure Stadium. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates have all gotten approval from the Sports and Exhibition Authority’s board to move forward with planned upgrades for their venues, according to a report by Adam Babetski of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Acrisure Stadium will be getting an upgrade to its Wi-Fi system and some security enhancements, which is all expected to be completed before the 2025 season.
The Steelers are spending an estimated $7 million to refurbish the Wi-Fi network at Acrisure Stadium. SEA Project Executive Doug Straley told the Post-Gazette that the current Wi-Fi system was installed in 2016 and has exceeded its lifespan. The upgrades will involve 1,357 wireless access points, new cabling, single-mode fiber and new electrical pathways intended to boost connectivity.
The Steelers are also spending $1.6 million to replace the planters around Acrisure Stadium with bollards, or short metal poles that stop vehicles from colliding with buildings. Ten of the bollards will be removable.
Steelers team president Art Rooney II said last year that the organization was exploring options to upgrade Acrisure Stadium.
“We are going through a stadium assessment at this point. Really looking at what it’s going to take to be in this stadium for the next 10, 20 years, whatever it’s going to be,” Rooney said. “It’s a process, and we’ve hired some consultants to help us look at it. We like the stadium. It’s a great facility. And with the right kinds of improvements, can continue to be our home for a long time.”
Rooney said that the Steelers will not be seeking a dome or roof as part of their request for renovations, however. It’s also hard to imagine the Steelers leaving the North Shore for the suburbs.
The Browns are building a new domed stadium in Brook Park, which is located in the suburbs south of the city. Cleveland Browns Stadium opened in 1999, two years before Acrisure Stadium. The Tennessee Titans are also building a new domed stadium, succeeding the current Nissan Stadium beginning in 2027. Nissan Stadium also opened in 1999.
Cleveland’s lease is up in 2028, while the Steelers’ lease ends in 2030. Acrisure itself has a deal in place with the organization for exclusive naming rights to the building through 2036.
