The Pittsburgh Steelers have added another quarterback to their roster.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing veteran quarterback Logan Woodside, head coach Mike Tomlin announced ahead of the team’s first preseason game.
The news doesn’t come as a surprise after sixth-round rookie quarterback Will Howard suffered a fractured bone in his hand that will force him to miss most, if not all, of the preseason.
The Steelers likely aren’t planning to play 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers very much over the next few weeks, either. So that would have left Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as their only quarterbacks left.
Woodside gives Pittsburgh some much-needed depth and experience at the position, and it seems like it was an easy decision since he has ties with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. The two spent a couple of years together with the Tennessee Titans from 2019-20.
The 30-year-old began his NFL career as a seventh-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, he was waived just a few months after signing his rookie contract.
Woodside then signed to the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans but was released less than a month later.
Struggling to find his footing in the NFL, Woodside turned to the Alliance of American Football (AAF) — a professional American football minor league. He was drafted by the San Antonio Commanders in the third round of the 2019 AAF QB Draft.
Woodside had a few good performances, including one where he had a perfect 158.3 rating, but the AAF suspended football operations.
That left Woodside looking for another opportunity once again. Luckily, his stint in the AAF caught the attention of the Titans, who he re-signed with in 2019 and would go on to earn two more contracts with.
From 2019-21, Woodside served as a backup in Tennessee, completing one pass for seven yards.
In 2022, Woodside was signed by the Atlanta Falcons off the Titans practice squad, and then in 2024, he re-signed with the Bengals. He was released in July.
