Following his NFL debut on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed offensive tackle Dylan Cook to the active roster from the practice squad.
The Steelers elevated Cook from the practice squad to the active/inactive roster for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, and he ended up playing 13 offensive snaps after starting left tackle Andrus Peat left the game with a concussion. Cook was impressive in his limited snaps.
The Steelers are hindered at the offensive tackle position with starting left tackle Broderick Jones (neck) on and Calvin Anderson (knee) on injured reserve. Anderson was just placed on IR on Tuesday. If Peat can’t go on Sunday, Cook will make his first career start at left tackle.
During his Tuesday press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin gave Cook high praise for his standout performance against Baltimore.
“You’re excited for a guy when he gets an opportunity to play. He certainly has worked hard and has been professional. I loved his mindset when he went in, happy for him,” Tomlin said. “He may get another opportunity this week, we’ll see where this week leads us.”
Cook was signed by the Steelers at the very beginning of OTAs in 2023 after spending the 2022 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He impressed with the Steelers, and made the team’s 53-man roster as the No. 4 tackle. He spent the entire 2023 season on the active roster, but was dressed for one game, with the Steelers have excellent health along their line last year.
Cook was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 27, 2024. He was released on Oct. 31, but was re-signed to the practice squad on November 4. He signed a reserve/future contract in January of 2025.
Cook was waived by the Steelers on August 26, 2025, and re-signed to the practice squad.
A Butte, Montana native, Cook came out of Butte High School as a quarterback and attended NAIA Montana State-Northern for his first two collegiate seasons, seeing some action in 2017.
In 2018, he made the extremely unusual transition from quarterback to offensive line while transferring up to the FCS level to walk on with the Montana Grizzlies. Cook sat out 2018 due to the transfer, but played in the 13 games, winning a starting job in 2019 and a scholarship. His 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19, but Cook returned in 2021 and became an All-Big Sky selection at tackle.
