The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed linebacker Kana’i Mauga to the practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday.
Mauga takes the place of cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., who was signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster on Tuesday.
Mauga most recently was with the Los Angeles Chargers, being released on Oct. 7 after signing with the club on May 12.
Mauga signed with the Denver Broncos following the 2022 NFL Draft. He moved on to the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad late in the season and was with Las Vegas until 2024.
He appeared in five games for the Raiders in 2023 and 12 games in 2024. In his 17 career games, he’s recorded six total tackles. He was predominately a special teams player with the Raiders.
Mauga played all four years of his college ball at USC, starting 24 of the 43 games he appeared in. He had 207 tackles, 106 of them solo stops, 16.5 tackles for a loss, five sacks and three interceptions.
Mauga is a Waiʻanae, Hawaii native. He joins fellow Hawaiians outside linebacker Nick Herbig, left guard Isaac Seumalo and wide receiver Roman Wilson on the Steelers’ roster.
Mauga attended Waianae High School. He was named the Hawaii Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, recording 52.5 total tackles and three defensive touchdowns. He ranked a four-star prospect and the best outside linebacker in the state.
Along with signing Mauga, the Steelers have opened the 21-day practice window for rookie cornerback and kickoff returner Donte Kent.
