The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed veteran cornerback Tre Flowers, the team announced on Thursday.

Flowers, 30, has been signed to the 53-man active roster and will take the roster spot vacated by wide receiver DK Metcalf, who is suspended for the final two games of the 2025 regular season.

The 6-foot-3, 203-pound cornerback has been with the practice squads of the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions this season, playing in two games with Detroit in October.

Originally a fifth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks out of Oklahoma State in 2018, Flowers spent his four seasons in Seattle. He started as a rookie for the Seahawks in 2018 and 2019, before losing his starting job in the 2020 season. His best statistical year came in 2019, when he recorded 82 tackles, two for a loss, two quarterback hits, eight passes defended, three interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

In 2021, Flowers was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals, and spent two seasons with the Bengals, primarily serving as specialist defender, covering tight ends. He signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023, spending the entire season there.

In 2024, he split time between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts, appearing in a total of five games.

The Steelers have been running short at cornerback over the last two weeks, with James Pierre out with an injury, and suffered more attrition when Brandin Echols was injured against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. That caused safety Jalen Ramsey to move to the slot to finish that game, with Chuck Clark playing at safety. Undrafted rookie cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. made his NFL debut, appearing in one snap when Joey Porter Jr. was briefly sidelined.

The addition of Flowers and his 97 career games played will give the Steelers additional depth in their secondary if Pierre and Echols are unable to return this week. His skills as a tight end coverage specialist could also be useful as the Steelers close the season with a pair of teams in the Cleveland Browns (David Njoku and Harold Fannin) and Baltimore Ravens (Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews) both have two top-flight receiving options at the position.
