The Pittsburgh Steelers’ secondary has dealt with attrition for most of this season. As Mike Tomlin’s team prepares for a Monday night matchup with the Miami Dolphins, this week will be no different. Despite finishing Sunday’s road win over the Baltimore Ravens, cornerback James Pierre is dealing with an ailment.

“We have some other guys who got banged up during the course of play,” Tomlin said on Tuesday during his weekly press conference. “James Pierre suffered a calf injury. He was able to finish, but certainly, it could impact him at the early portions of this week.”

The Steelers also have Asante Samuel Jr. and usual slot cornerback Brandin Echols in the mix.

Pierre has stepped in opposite third-year coverman Joey Porter Jr., replacing veteran Darius Slay, who has since parted ways with the Steelers. The Buffalo Bills claimed Slay, but he opted not to report and said he’s considering retirement.

Pierre intercepted his cousin, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, during the Steelers’ critical divisional win. He was asked afterward if it gives him some family bragging rights.

“Not necessarily, no. It’s just my mom will be talking about it a lot,” Pierre said.

“I was trying to make something happen. It was like third down. I tried to throw it to Rasheen [Ali], but I threw it too light. He just made a good play on it with a one-handed interception,” Jackson said.
