The Pittsburgh Steelers will have a virtual interview with Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley on Friday for their head coaching vacancy, according to a report by Peter Schrager of ESPN.
The Steelers requested to interview Hafley on Thursday, one of the second wave of interviews requested by the team following the resignation of Mike Tomlin on Tuesday. Because the Packers were the in the playoffs, the interview must be virtual, by league rule. According to Schrager, Hafley interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday before his interview with the Steelers on Friday. He also already interviewed with the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals. The Steelers can host him for an in-person interview starting on Monday.
Hafley is a rising candidate in this year’s coaching carousel. Hafley completed an interview with the Dolphins for their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday. He’s the betting favorite to land the Miami job. Hafley interviwed with the Arizona Cardinals for their vacant HC position on Wednesday.
Before Hafley went to Green Bay, he was the head coach at Boston College for four seasons (2020-23), leading the Eagles to bowl eligibility in three of the four years. Hafley has been the Packers’ defensive coordinator for the last two seasons.
Before his time at BC, he spent the 2019 season as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Ohio State. He was the San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach from 2016-2018 and the Cleveland Browns defensive backs coach from 2014-2015. Hafley also spent five years at Pitt from 2006-2010.
