PITTSBURGH –– Running back Jaylen Warren unexpectedly missed practice with an illness on Thursday as the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare to host the Houston Texans in a Wild Card playoff game on Monday Night Football.
Warren was the only Steelers player who did not participate in Thursday’s first practice session of the week at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, which took place outdoors. Warren was seen in the Steelers’ locker room after practice, wearing a surgical mask.
Steelers MVP Kenneth Gainwell is the obvious choice to replace Warren if he misses any time due to illness. Rookie Kaleb Johnson, the team’s No. 3 running back, has not been dressed the last few weeks, so if Warren’s illness drags on into the week, the team may need to shake up its inactive players for Monday’s game.
Head coach Mike Tomlin had said on Tuesday that there were players that had suffered bumps and bruises in the Sunday night win over the Baltimore Ravens, and may be limited in the early portion of this week, but that turned out not to be the case, with the only Steelers player limited in practice today being veteran defensive tackle Cam Heyward, who was given a partial rest day.
