Current and former Pittsburgh Steelers reveal their true feelings about having training camp in Latrobe.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have held their training camp in Latrobe at Saint Vincent College since 1966 and are set to head there for the 59th time next week. However, that wouldn’t necessarily be the case if it were up to the players.
Steelers long-time defensive tackle Cameron Heyward and former linebacker Bud Dupree recently revealed their true feelings about having to report back to college every summer.
“Nah, they still go to Latrobe?” Dupree said on Not Just Football with Cam Heyward. “The best training camp we had was the COVID year. We stayed at our own house. … I hated the dorms. I hated it.”
Heyward joined Dupree in that sentiment.
“The COVID year, we were trying so hard to win a Super Bowl so then we could tell Mr. [Art] Rooney [II] and be like, ‘Mr. Rooney, we won a Super Bowl, we don’t need to go back to Latrobe,’” Heyward said. “It did not work out in that way. We were back in Latrobe the next year.”
The Steelers have been long considered to have one of the most difficult and physical training camps around the league, but that may not be the case anymore, either.
With new head coach Mike McCarthy taking over, the Steelers have already implemented a different training camp schedule than what they had under Mike Tomlin.
Seven Shots and Backs on Backers, which were two training camp staples under Tomlin, are also not expected to continue with McCarthy.
Those changes alone should give the Steelers training camp a different feel for the players. However, only time will tell if it will be enough to change their long-standing opinion about having to go back to college and live in dorms.
