The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced changes to their training camp practice schedule.
The St. Vincent College sessions, which begin on July 29, were originally tabbed to start at 11 a.m., but one practice will start as early as 10:15 a.m. and — other than the Aug. 8 evening practice — four will get going at 11:20 a.m.
This will mark Mike McCarthy’s first training camp in charge of his hometown team. Four-time Associated Press NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who worked with McCarthy and won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers, is among the players excited to get back to training camp.
“I just love the opportunity for camaraderie and for that team chemistry,” Rodgers said earlier this offseason. “Mike (Tomlin) used to talk a lot about capturing that, and it cannot be quantified. That’s what Latrobe gives you, the opportunity to spend time with each other every night time, on the breaks and stuff. You’re staying in the dorm, sharing a bathroom and a shower with a teammate.
“There’s some great team-bonding opportunities for that. I just think it’s invaluable.”
The Steelers open up their preseason schedule by welcoming in the Packers on Thursday, Aug. 13. Pittsburgh hosts the New York Jets — Rodgers’ other former team — on Friday, Aug. 21, before closing out exhibitions with a visit to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, Aug. 27.
The Steelers start their regular season slate at home against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 13.
