The Pittsburgh Steelers have requested an interview with Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver for their head coaching vacancy, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Weaver is the third reported candidate that the Steelers have reached out to interview — joining Los Angeles Rams passing coordinator Nate Scheelhaase and Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula.

Weaver faced the Steelers for years as a player and a coach for the Ravens. He was a defensive end for the Ravens from 2002-2005 before playing three seasons with the Houston Texans.

Following his playing career, he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida in 2010 and then as a linebackers coach at North Texas in 2011.

Weaver was a defensive line coach for several NFL teams before returning to the Ravens in 2021. He was Baltimore’s defensive line coach and run game coordinator. He was then promoted to assistant head coach in 2022 while still holding the position of DL coach.

Weaver joined Mike McDaniel’s staff in 2024 as Miami’s defensive coordinator. It was the first time that Weaver held a DC job.

McDaniel was fired as the Dolphins head coach following the 2025 season, so Weaver’s status with the club is up in the air. The Dolphins have not interviewed Weaver for the vacant HC position yet.

The Steelers have plucked three relatively unknown defensive coordinators and watched them grow into the best head coaches in the franchise’s history. After longtime leader Mike Tomlin resigned on Tuesday, Steelers president Art Rooney II isn’t pigeonholing his head coaching search to fit the same criteria.

“For now, I don’t wanna sort of put any real parameters around it,” Rooney said during a press conference on Wednesday. “We’re gonna be an open book in terms of who we look for and the list that we build. Can I sign up for another Chuck Noll or another Bill Cowher or another Mike Tomlin? Sure. Somebody that we feel fits that mold would be great, but, for now, we’re not gonna narrow the box too much.”

Noll, Cowher and Tomlin were all in their 30s when they were hired by the Steelers. Cowher and Tomlin were 34, while Noll was 37. Weaver is 45, so he’s an older candidate. Scheelhaase is 35, while Shula is 39.
