What a wild week it has been for the Pittsburgh Steelers. It seems like every hour, some breaking news surfaces about this Steelers organization.
After the embarrassing loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night, longtime head coach Mike Tomlin announced that he would be leaving the team, stepping down from the role as HC. This news will cause a major chain reaction with the roster and the rest of the staff. Aaron Rodgers could be on his way out of Pittsburgh, as he signed to play under Tomlin.
The Steelers have now requested their first head coach interview in the post-Tomlin era. The name is one you likely haven’t heard about, but is projected to be a rising coach around the league. Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase is expected to interview with the Steelers for the head coaching job, according to Adam Schefter.
“The Pittsburgh Steelers first known head coach interview request is for Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, per source. Baltimore, Cleveland and Las Vegas also have requested interviews with him during this hiring cycle.”
Scheelhaase is another one of Sean McVay’s padawans. Scheelhaase is only 35 years of age but has a very respectable resume. He began his coaching career at Illinois after he was the QB for the team in 2013-14. He was doing football operations in 2015 as well as the running backs coach. He was promoted to offensive assistant in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, Scheelhaase became the running backs coach at Iowa State under Matt Campbell. He eventually worked his way up to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.
Scheelhaase continued to work his way up. The Rams hired him last season as the offensive assistant, and this year, he was the passing game coordinator. If he continues on his hot track, he could be an offensive coordinator or even a head coach in no time. The Steelers become the fourth team interested in the rising coach.
