The Pittsburgh Steelers are releasing veteran wide receiver Robert Woods, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Woods, 33, joined the Steelers on a one-year free agent contract this offseason. His release will cause a $745,000 dead cap hit, but save $1.255 million against the salary cap this season.
A veteran of 12 NFL seasons and a Super Bowl winner with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, Woods was unable to crack the Steelers’ roster despite a drastic need at outside receiver behind DK Metcalf.
Woods played a ton for the Steelers this preseason, frequently entering games in the second half and playing with the second- and third-team players. Despite the reduced competition, in 69 offensive snaps, he was targeted just one time, making one catch for four yards.
Woods is coming off a career-worst season with the Houston Texans in 2024, when he caught 20 passes for 203 yards over 15 games, and was not given an increased role in the offense despite a rash of injuries at the position for Houston.
Rapoport said that there is the potential for a reunion between the Steelers and Woods, which suggests a slot on the practice squad, and that the veteran wants to keep playing in 2025.
Woods is not subject to waivers and is free to sign with another team immediately.
