The Pittsburgh Steelers are parting ways with one of their veteran running backs.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made their first decision at running back, releasing veteran Evan Hull as part of the teamβs initial cuts to trim its roster down to the NFL-mandated 53-man limit.
Hull, 24, joined the Steelers on a reserve/future contract in January and played in all three of their preseason games. However, he rushed for just 33 yards on 11 carries and failed to find the end zone.
That, of course, made his already uphill battle of making the team only more difficult. Pittsburgh still has five other running backs on the roster in Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell, Kaleb Johnson, Trey Sermon and Lew Nichols with still another cut or two to come.
Hull began his NFL career as the No. 176 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn meniscus and MCL during his first career rush attempt, ending his 2023 season.
In 2024, Hull was waived by the Colts on August 27, and then re-signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on October 12, waived on October 26 and re-signed to the practice squad.
Hull led all FBS running backs with 54 receptions and was second amongst all Big Ten receivers with 483 yards after the catch in his final season at Northwestern in 2022. He finished the season with 913 rushing yards and a career-best 546 receiving yards.
He was also only the 16th player since 2000 to average over 75 rushing yards and 45 receiving yards a game over an entire season, most recently done by Travis Etienne and Saquon Barkley.
Hull, who stands at 5-foot-10, 209 pounds, ran a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.
