The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived undrafted rookie tight end Chamon Metayer, the team announced on Thursday after signing veteran Robert Tonyan.

Tonyan and Metayer were both participants in the team’s two-day minicamp on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the veteran Tonyan there as pro tryout.

Metayer, an undrafted free agent who, came to Pittsburgh with a strong athletic profile. He stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 255 pounds. He posted a 34.5-inch vertical and a 9-foot-10 broad jump in pre-draft testing.

Metayer, a Miami-area native, played with Max Iheanachor, the Steelers’ first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, at Arizona, where he named a second-team All-Big 12 honoree last season after catching 38 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns. He arrived in Tempe in April 2024 after taking part in 10 practices with Deion Sanders and Colorado. Before that, he played in 17 games over three seasons at Cincinnati, reeling in 24 receptions for 290 yards and five touchdowns.

“Metayer is a big-bodied, contested-catch tight end who could develop into a serviceable depth option if he continues to add strength,” Pro Football Focus wrote in a scouting report.

Metayer was rated a four-star prospect out of high school. Rivals listed him as the No. 17 athlete in the country and the No. 56 player from Florida.

Metayer was one of two undrafted free agents the team signed immediately after the draft, along with USC’s Lake McRee. JJ Galbreath and Jaheim Bell, who were both UDFAs in 2025, are also both on the team’s 90-man offseason roster.
