The Pittsburgh Steelers have released running back Trey Sermon, the team announced on Tuesday.

Sermon played well for the Steelers this preseason, rushing 10 times for 50 yards, with his 5.0 yards per carry finishing second on the team. He also scored the team’s lone rushing touchdown of the preseason and caught eight passes for 46 yards. Sermon’s 96 yards from scrimmage were third on the team this preseason.

Sermon, 26, joined the Steelers as a free agent this offseason after spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with three different teams. He was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers out of Ohio State in 2021, but was released entering his second season.

Sermon was then picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2022 season and cut in September 2023. He then joined the Indianapolis Colts, where he earned the most extensive playing time of his NFL career, gaining 319 yards over 31 games between 2023 and 2024.

With the Steelers, Sermon was slotted as the fourth running back behind Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell and Kaleb Johnson. The decision to release Sermon likely means that the team will keep only three running backs on its 53-man active roster this season.

The 6-foot, 215-pound Sermon is a bigger player than either of the three backs on the roster and could be an attractive option for the Steelers to bring back to the practice squad, if he doesn’t find another opportunity.

Sermon was released as part of the Steelers’ final cuts on Tuesday. The team cut 11 players on Saturday and 13 more on Monday before getting down to the 53-man limit by the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline.

As a veteran, Sermon does not have to clear waivers and is free to sign with another team immediately.
