PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed wide receiver Lance McCutcheon to practice squad, then team announced on Wednesday, replacing departing veteran Robert Woods.
Both Woods and McCutcheon were released last week as the Steelers cut their roster from 90 players to 53. Woods was initially re-signed to the practice squad, but after one practice session, the veteran changed his mind, requesting his release on Tuesday.
With Woods out of the picture, the Steelers replaced him on the practice squad with McCutcheon, who also spent part of the 2024 season on that unit.
A 6-foot-3, 202-pound native of Bozeman, Montana, McCutcheon joined the Steelers’ practice squad on Oct. 14 last season and stayed there until Nov. 12. In January, he was re-signed to a future contract for the 2025 season.
This preseason, McCutcheon appeared in all three games, making five catches for 66 yards. His best performance came in the preseason finale, when was targeted four times, catching three passes for 52 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown from Skylar Thompson in the second quarter that was the only time the Steelers found the end zone all night.

McCutchen first joined the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Montana State in 2022. He played in 10 games for the Rams as a rookie, without recording a reception. He did make five tackles on special teams.
McCutcheon was waived by the Rams coming out of training camp in 2023. He spent the first half of the 2023 season on the Houston Texans’ practice squad, and the second half on the New York Jets practice squad.
He re-signed with the Jets for 2024, but was released in August and was out of the league until catching on with the Steelers.
In addition to signing McCutcheon, the Steelers also officially announced the signing of linebacker Jon Rhattigan to the practice squad, and released guard Aiden Williams.
