The Pittsburgh Steelers are re-signing undrafted free agent safety Sebastian Castro to their practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday. Castro didn’t survive the Steelers’ final roster cuts, but he’ll get the chance to develop on the practice squad.
During the Steelers’ three preseason contests, Castro totaled 11 tackles. As a redshirt senior at Iowa, Castro was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree, racking up 45 stops, three tackles for loss, an interception, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. He was a Pro Football Focus first-team All-American the campaign before.
That year, he played in the same secondary as Cooper DeJean, now a Philadelphia Eagles cornerback who was an Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate a season ago.
Castro is one of the more intriguing Steelers undrafted rookies. He showed promise at training camp, but the safety room is loaded with veterans such as DeShon Elliott, Juan Thornhill and Miles Killebrew.
“For someone who thinks they’re going to get drafted and then don’t end up getting drafted, it’s like a shot to the heart. It definitely adds motivation,” Castro said at OTAs. “That’s part of the game, though. That’s why I love this game. You’re never going to win every single day and you’re never going to be perfect.”
Players on the practice squad are free to sign with other teams at any time. The Steelers have a maximum of 17 slots on their practice squad, which is usually filled by a combination of players the team released and cuts from other squads.
