One of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ running backs hopes he made a strong enough case to make the 53-man roster.

CHARLOTTE — The Pittsburgh Steelers have several new faces in their running back room this year and one his hoping he did enough to make the 53-man roster with the NFL’s dreaded cutdown day just a few days away.

Steelers running back Trey Sermon had arguably his best performance of the preseason against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night and he attributes it to putting his head down and working all summer.

“That was really my main focus, how can I fit into this culture,” Sermon said. “Buy in as quick as I can and just establish that I can contribute and just showcase that each and every day, getting better, adjusting to the coaches and I feel like I did a good job of that.”

Sermon rushed for 39 yards on just four carries (9.8 yards per carry) and reeled in three of his four targets for 14 yards in the 19-10 win.

Only time will tell it will be enough for Sermon to earn a spot on Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster with other running backs Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell and Kaleb Johnson seemingly locks.

However, he believes the room will be special in 2025, either way.

“Everybody’s a little bit different, but we have a great room,” Sermon said. “This is one of the best rooms I’ve been around. We all get along great. We all push each other. It’s definitely a real brotherhood.”

A third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Sermon has rushed for 505 yards and three touchdowns in his NFL career. He played college football at Oklahoma (2017-19) and Ohio State (2020), racking up 2,946 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground.
